GREENVILLE, S.C. --- Senior Robin Smith and junior Chris Ault each carded a one-under 71 to help East Carolina assume the overall team lead Saturday at the Furman Intercollegiate.
After 36 holes of competition, East Carolina (288-2983=591) holds a two stroke lead over Virginia Tech (297-286=593). Rhode Island (294-291=585) is in third place followed by Elon (287-299=586).
Ben Spitz (71-70=141) of Rhode Island and Ryan Sypniewski (69-72=141) of Virginia Tech moved into a three-way tie for first with first round tri-leader Stuart Carrihill (68-73=141) of Charleston Southern. Seven other golfers, including Smith, enter the final round within two strokes of the individual lead.
Smith fired a one-under for a second consecutive round and will enter the third round tied for fourth place, one shot off the pace.
ECU junior Andre Thorsen, who entered the second round tied for first, shot a five-over 77 and fell into a tie for 12th place.
Ault moved up to 24th place with a 36-hole total of 147. Markus Leandersson carded a six-over 78 and is tied for 55th with a two-round total of 155. Junior Martin Nicholls shot two-over Saturday and is tied for 66th with a score of 152.
The 54-hole tournament concludes Sunday with final round action beginning at 8 a.m.
