Krog Sits In Fifth Place At C-USA Golf Championships

ONEONTA, Ala. - On the strength of a four-under par performance from UTEP senior Gerina Mendoza, the Miners are tied with SMU for first place as both teams carded a 308. A total of 44 golfers played 18 holes in Monday's opening round at the par 72, 6,161-yard Limestone Springs Golf Club in Oneonta, Ala. on a clear and sunny day.
Mendoza was the only player to break par during today's round, while teammate Deborah Martinez also chipped in with a 76 to place sixth for the Miners.
The Mustangs are led by the sister tandem of sophomore Kate Ackerson, who shot a one-over to tie for second place with Memphis senior Stacey Tate. SMU senior Jennifer Ackerson is in a seven-way tie, which also includes classmate Ashley Deatherage, for seventh place with a 77.
UCF junior Annabel Silk led the Golden Knights (309, third) with a two-over 74 to place fourth on the individual leader board, while Tate and the Memphis Tigers finished just one stroke behind for fourth.
Defending champion East Carolina is in fifth place on the strength of a three-over-par round from 2006 medalist Lene Krog, who finished in the top five. Tulsa finished right behind the Pirates with a 315 to place sixth under the direction of first-year head coach Trelle McCombs.
Marshall, UAB and Southern Miss rounded out the nine-team field, respectively, finishing just three strokes apart.
Second round action begins at 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday, with the final round teeing off at 8 a.m. on Wednesday. The winner of the C-USA Championship receives an automatic berth to the NCAA Regionals. Live scoring is available on www.conferenceusa.com.
