GREENVILLE, N.C. - Former East Carolina men's and women's golf coach Kevin Williams has re-joined the Pirate athletics department, accepting the position as head women's golf coach according to an announcement from ECU Director of Athletics Terry Holland Wednesday.
Williams, who became the Lady Pirates' first head coach in 2000, returns to his alma mater after spending the past 18 months as the head golf professional at Walnut Creek Country Club in Goldsboro, N.C. He replaces Kim Lewellen who left to take the head women's golf position at the University of Virginia after guiding East Carolina to the 2006 Conference USA Championship and a berth in the 2006 NCAA East Regionals.
During his earlier 10-and-a-half year tenure at ECU, Williams guided the Lady Pirates to a 583-271-10 mark, which included a pair of NCAA at-large bids in 2003 and 2005, and coached Adrienne Millican to a 2004 NCAA Women's Golf Championship appearance. During the 2003 season, Williams was named C-USA Women's Golf Coach-of-the-Year after leading ECU to a 132-21-2 record, which included three wins over top 25 teams, three team titles and nine top-five finishes.
In five seasons at the helm of the Lady Pirates, Williams coached seven National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) All-America Scholars, nine All C-USA sections, three C-USA All-Freshman Team choices and one C-USA All-Decade member in Millican. Lene Krog, who earned 2006 C-USA Freshman-of-the-Year, first-team all conference, all-tournament and league medalist honors was recruited by Williams and played under him during the fall of 2005.
Williams also coached the men's program to a 987-808-26 overall record during his first tenure in Greenville. In 10-plus seasons guiding the men, he led the Pirates to six team tournament titles, 12 individual crowns and coached five Academic All-America selections.
A 1985 graduate of ECU with a bachelor of arts degree in history, Williams originally returned to his alma mater on August 1, 1995 when he succeeding long-time coach and GCAA Hall of Fame member Hal Morrison to become the 15th golf coach in school history.
Prior to heading the East Carolina golf program in 1995, Williams was the head golf professional and director of golf operations at the Kinston (N.C.) Country Club for eight years, dating back to 1987. While at Kinston CC, Williams was active as a junior golf coordinator/teacher and a player in the Carolinas PGA Section.
Williams' playing career highlights include victories in eight of the Carolina's PGA Pro-Am Championships. In addition, he also qualified for and competed in the 1989 and 1992 PGA Club Professional Championship. His career led him to get involved in the affairs of the Carolinas PGA Section, first as a member of the board of directors and later as a chairman of the tournament committee before his six years of service to the organization ended in 1997.
Williams and wife Trude are the parents of son Patrick and daughter Anniken.
