Abby Bools Leads Pirates To Myrtle Beach Classic Title

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. -Sophomore Abby Bools carded a final round score of 68 and defeated teammate Amber Littman and Georgia State's Iliska Verwey in a playoff to capture her first collegiate individual title Tuesday afternoon at the 2007 Myrtle Beach Classic. The 36-hole event was being held at the par-72, 6,136-yard Grande Dunes Resort Golf Club.
Bools (74-68=142) claimed the title after paring the fifth playoff hole (No. 8) and watching Littman (71-71=142) record a bogey. Verway (69-73=142) was ousted from playoff contention with her double-bogey on the second playoff hole.
"I am very pleased with the way we came out and played in our first event of the year," said Head Coach Kevin Williams. "This was a real solid effort by everyone and I couldn't be happier. We are a young team, but I thought we played with a lot of maturity."
Ana Maria Puche finished tenth after her 36-hole score of 146 (72-74) and Emelie Lind claimed a share of 14th place with a six-over 148 (74-74) to help East Carolina put four players in the top-20. Freshman Colleen Estes shot a 158 (81-77) finishing tied for 53rd.
The Pirates (14-0) tied the school record for the lowest 18-hole team score with their 287 round on Tuesday and beat Georgia State (579) by one stroke. Rounding out the top-five were UNC-Greensboro (595), University of Miami (596) and Campbell (597).
ECU will hit the links again on Oct. 5 when they travel to Chapel Hill, N.C. to participate in the Tar Heel Invitational.
