GREENVILLE, N.C. - The East Carolina women's golf team recorded its third top-three finish in four events when they took second place at the 2008 Lady Pirate Intercollegiate Tuesday afternoon. The tournament was being played at the par-71, 5,939-yard Greenville Country Club.
Trailing by 13 strokes to Georgia State (882) heading into final round action, the Pirates drew within six shots of the Panthers through nine holes but was unable to continue the momentum and ended up with a tournament score of 899, 17 strokes off the lead. Miami (Fla.) took third place with a final score of 913, which was followed by Nebraska (917) and Elon (920). The second place finish was ECU's sixth top-three placement in the eight-year history of the tournament.
ECU junior Abby Bools took home all-tournament honors after firing a three-day score of 220 (73-69-78), which included seven birdies and 34 pars to finish tied for third. For Bools, it was her second top-three finish of the season and 13th career top-10 placement. Fellow classmate Ana Maria Puche finished tied for eighth in the event after carding rounds of 78, 73 and 72 for a 54-hole score of 223. Sophomore Amber Littman was the third Pirate to collect a top-10 finish when she finished with a 225 (75-75-75).
Colleen Estes (234) finished tied for 40th and Amy Otteson (237) took home a share of 56th place. Playing as individuals for the Pirates were Kristin Billings and Julia Strandberg who both finished tied for 80th with a score of 246.
Medalist honors went to Georgia State's Iliska Verwey (75-68-73=216) who finished one shot ahead of Florida International's Belen Buendia (72-75-70=217). Chelsea Curtis (Georgetown) finished tied for third with Bools, while Sandra Maier (Georgetown) took home fifth place with an event score of 221. The top five players were named to the all-tournament squad.
The Pirates will be back in action this weekend when they travel to Wilmington, N.C. to participate in the Landfall Tradition tournament Oct. 24-26.
