
Brizendine Places Third At Duke Collegiate

DURHAM, N.C. -- East Carolina junior Tripp Brizendine fired a one-over-par 72 to finish at six-over 219 (75-72-72) and earn a tie for third place at the Duke Coca-Cola Individual Collegiate at the Duke University Golf Club (6,961 yards, par 71) on Tuesday. North Carolina's Philip Chauncey fired a final round two-under 69 to overcome a five-shot deficit and claim the tournament win with a one-over 214 (74-71-69).
Chauncey, a native of Durham, N.C., posted 16 pars and two birdies for the only bogey-free round of the tournament. He opened the day with four straight pars before carding his first birdie on the 399-yard, par 4 fifth hole. Chauncey recorded 10 straight pars before moving to two-under with a birdie on No. 16. He closed out the round with pars on No. 17 and No. 18 to post a three-shot win.
Florida's Tim McKinney finished second overall with a four-over 217. He shot a two-over 73 in the closing round after opening with a pair of 72s on Monday. Carter Newman (Augusta State) and Chase MacFarland (North Carolina) finished tied with Brizendine for third.
Northern Illinois' Jeff Dick, N.C. State Andrew Byrd and Vanderbilt's John Ebert finished tied for sixth at seven-over 220, while Paul Ferrier (Charlotte) and Chad Day (N.C. State) were tied for ninth at eight-over (221).
The Pirate freshman trio of Jake Colley, Adam Stephenson and David Watkins finished tied for 30th at 16-over 229. Sophomore Matt Sterling finished tied for 42nd with a 21-over 234. Freshman Conner Sock finished two strokes behind his teammate with a 23-over 236.
East Carolina returns to team competition on Oct. 24 at the Landfall Tradition in Wilmington, N.C.
