CLEMMONS, N.C. - After impressive performances in the Conference USA Championship, the East Carolina men's and women's cross country teams kept up the good showings on Saturday afternoon in the NCAA Southeast Regional Championship at Tanglewood Park. The women placed 17th out of 33 squads, while the men finished 25th of 29. It is the highest finish for the women's team since the 2001 squad took 13th-place. The men also improved two places from their finish a year ago.
As she has for every meet of her career, sophomore Brittany Copeland paced the women's team, coming in 17th-place, with a time of 21:31 in the 6K. Her time is the second-fastest 6K in Pirate history, trailing only Kay Livick's 21:26 time from 2002. Junior Nicole Briggs came in second for ECU, finishing 46th overall with a time of 22:12.8, the eighth-fastest in program history. Freshman Tara Wilson continued her great initial season, checking in with a time of 22:47.3, good for 82nd-place. Junior Samantha Lichtner (23:46.2/149), sophomore Lisa DeLorenzo (24:15.0/176) and freshman Amanda Lapp (24:52.6/203) rounded out the rest of the Pirates finishers.
On the men's side, Freshman Zack Montijo came in first, as he has for every race of this season. Montijo came in 78th overall, with a time of 32:52.7 in the 10K. Checking in second on the team and 99th overall was junior Andrew Nastasiak, finishing in 33:13.9. Senior Drew Jenkins came in 155th overall with a time of 34:39.1. Finally for the Pirates, freshman Alexandre Prevost (36:34.9/193), Michael Scott (36:38.9/195) and sophomore Shaffey Singh (37:32.2/202) all turned in solid performances.
The NCAA Southeast Regional Championship concluded the 2008 season for both squads.
