IRVING, Texas - Junior cross country runner Jarrett Newby has been named the East Carolina recipient of the inaugural Conference USA Spirit of Service award, according to an announcement by the league office on Thursday. The award is designed to recognize the community service efforts of one student-athlete from each conference member, based upon significant community service, good academic standing and participation in his or her elected sport. The Spirit of Service award is to be presented three times throughout the year, once each for fall, winter and spring-season athletes.
Newby, the Endwell, N.Y., native was selected as ECU's first recipient based on his achievements both on and off the cross country course. He is an honor roll student and a member of ECU's Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC). Newby has also participated in numerous mentoring programs including ECU Friends, letter winner's weekend and the Elementary School Homework reward program.
Newby has collected 42 hours of mentoring just this fall and nearly 400 hours since coming to East Carolina. The exercise physiology major participated in the 2007 Gulu Walk, worked for Habitat for Humanity in New Orleans with the C-USA SAAC group, donated time for juvenile diabetes and the REAL Crisis Center and filmed an ECU athletics public service announcement.
