Pirate Golfers Claim Qdoba Invitational Title

MIAMI, Fla. - The East Carolina women's golf team picked up its fifth tournament championship in six events Tuesday afternoon at the 2008 Qdoba Invitational. The tournament was being held at the par-72, 6,210-yard Don Shula Golf Resort.

Abby Bools guided the Pirates (70-14-0) to the title with a two-over-par 218 (75-72-71) and recorded her second individual title and fourth top-10 finish of the season. Freshman Amber Littman (221) finished in fifth, while classmate Colleen Estes (225) took a share of ninth and senior Emelie Lind (227) tied for 15th. Rounding out the Pirate individuals was sophomore Ana Maria Puche who finished tied for 24th with a score of 229.

The Pirates, who are ranked No. 22 nationally, posted a 54-hole score of 887 (296-294-297) finishing 14 shots ahead of No. 29 Louisville (300-298-303=901) and 16 strokes ahead of No. 23 Virginia (307-298-298=903). Host school University of Miami finished fourth (907) while San Jose State (909) claimed fifth place.

"I'm extremely excited about the way we played in this tournament," said Head Coach Kevin Williams. "This validates our wonderful fall that we had winning four team titles. It was a tough field with four of the top-35 nationally-ranked teams competing against one another. I am very pleased with the way Abby (Bools) and Amber (Littman) played, as well as Colleen (Estes) who played her best golf this week."

ECU will hit the links again on March 9, 2008 when they travel Pinehurst, N.C. for the Pinehurst Challenge.

Post-Tournament Notes:

ECU extended its school record by picking up their fifth team title of the year (Myrtle Beach Classic, UNCG/Starmount Fall Classic, Edwin Watts/Palmetto Intercollegiate, UAB Beach Bash and Qdoba Invitational). They have won four consecutive tournaments played and 5-of-6 on the season.

Abby Bools won her second collegiate title of the season (Myrtle Beach Classic) with a score of 218. She becomes the third Lady Pirate golfer to claim two titles in the same season (Jessica Krasny/2002-03 and Adrienne Millican/2003-04).

In 5-of-6 events this season, the Pirates had at least two golfers finish in the top-5 and in 4-of-6 events they had at least four golfers finish in the top-20.

ECU's 54-hole score of 887 is tied for the third best team score in school history.

Ana Maria Puche ranked third in par-3 scoring (E) for the event.

Abby Bools tied for the tournament lead in par-4 scoring (+1), while ranking among the leaders in par-3 scoring (+1), par-5 scoring (E) and total pars (41).

The Pirates finished first in par-3 scoring (+6), par-5 scoring (+2) and birdies (28), while finishing second in par-4 scoring (+32) and pars (181).
