Greenville, S.C. - East Carolina junior Andre Thorsen carded a one-under par 71 (36-35) to earn a tie for third place at the conclusion of the opening round of play at the 39th annual Furman Intercollegiate on Friday at the par 72, 6,800-yard Furman University Golf Course.
Chattanooga's Jonathan Hodge paced the field with an opening round 69 to give the Mocs a three-stroke lead. East Carolina is in 12th place after firing a team round of 300, 13 strokes behind the Mocs.
Hodge posted four birdies and just one bogey to claim a one-stroke advantage over second place Peter McGibney (35-35=70) of Francis Marion and two stroke lead over a group of eight golfers tied at one-under-par that includes Furman's Danny Schmieding.
Chattanooga enters Saturday's second round with a three-stroke lead over South Carolina and four shots ahead of third place Clemson. Vanderbilt and Ohio State round out the top five.
Pirate sophomore Tripp Brizendine recorded a two-over 74 (37-37) and is tied for 31st, just five strokes out of first place. Sophomore Tanner Briele sits in 71st with an 18-hole total of five-over 77 (39-38), while freshman Warren Straub is one stroke back of his teammate (38-40). Junior Markus Leandersson fired a 10-over 82 (40-42).
Second round action is slated to get underway at 8 a.m. on Saturday morning with final round play slated for 8 a.m. on Sunday.
