Abby Bools Named To C-USA All-Academic Team

IRVING, Texas - Six women's golf student-athletes, representing five different institutions, were named to the 2008 Conference USA All-Academic Team. Two seniors, two juniors and two sophomores make up the 2008 All-Academic Team that features three repeat selections.
East Carolina sophomore Abby Bools, a two-time C-USA Golfer of the Week in 2007-08, maintains a 3.71 GPA in history. Bools is one of three Pirate golfers to record two medalist honors in the same season. She carded a personal-best round of 68 at the Myrtle Beach Classic earlier this year. Her mark was the third-lowest round in school history. Bools was also named to the 2006-07 NCAA Division I National Golf Coaches Association (NGCA) All-American Scholar team last season and is a three-time ECU Director of Athletics Honor Roll recipient.
Memphis junior Rachel Larson holds a 3.54 GPA also in history and is a repeat selection to the All-Academic Team. Larson has been named to the Dean's List three times and is a member of the Tiger Academic 30 and the Tiger 3.0 clubs. A two-time sections to the C-USA Commissioner's Honor Roll, she has 11 career Top 20 finishes. The Colorado native was an All-C-USA third-team selection last season and a key member of the Tiger's 2007 C-USA Championship team that qualified for the NCAA Regionals.
Junior Kate Ackerson of SMU is also a repeat selection. Ackerson holds a 3.89 GPA in business and was named to the 2007 NGCA All-American Scholar Team and ESPN the Magazine's Academic All-District squad in 2007. A two-time All-Conference USA selection, Ackerson has won three career C-USA Golfer of the Week awards. The Allen, Texas native finished third at the 2007 C-USA Championships.
Tulsa teammates Michaela Cavener and Tara Goedeken were also chosen to the squad. Cavener, a 2007 All-Academic team member, has been named to the Athletic Director's Honor Roll for seven semesters. She has a team leading 74.7 stoke average and has placed in the Top 20 in all eight tournaments in which she has played. Cavener has been named C-USA Golfer of the Week four times this season and six times in her career. She has a 3.39 GPA in international business.
Goedeken, a transfer from Wichita State, has been a Dean's List member all three of her semesters at Tulsa. She has a 3.64 GPA in exercise sports science and has a 76.7 strike average. The Dodge City, Kan., native has placed among the Top 20 in six of eight events this season.
UTEP sophomore Deborah Martinez rounds out the list of honorees. Martinez carries a 3.71 GPA in economics and is a two-time member of the C-USA Commissioner's Honor Roll. She leads UTEP in stroke average (79.2) and claimed a 10th place finish at the ORU Shootout earlier this season. The San Carlos, Sonora, Mexico native is also a member of UTEP Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC).
These six and many other outstanding student-athletes are gearing up for the 2008 Conference USA Women's Golf Championship, which will be held April 14-16. This year's 54-hole event is being hosted by UTEP at the Butterfield Trail Golf Club in El Paso, Texas.
