Pirates Finish Ninth At River Landing

WALLACE, N.C. --- East Carolina carded a 54-hole team total of 19-over-par 883 (294-298-291) to earn a ninth place finish Sunday at the River Landing Intercollegiate being held at the par 72, 7,112-yard River Landing Golf Course.
Duke won the team title as the Blue Devils finished at 13-under-par (284-290-277=851); nine strokes ahead of second place NC State (288-286-286=860). Conference USA member Memphis finished in third place (292-290-282=860) followed by Wake Forest (287-294-287=868) and Florida State (287-294-287=868) to round out the top five.
Michael Schachner of Duke won individual medalist honors by defeating Wake Forest's Webb Simpson in a one-hole playoff. Schachner (68-72-69=209) and Simpson (67-72-70=209) each finished the 54-hole tournament at seven-under-par.
ECU junior Andre Thorsen carded a three-over-par 219 (73-74-72) to finish tied for 28th. Freshman Warren Straub (76-73-72=221) and junior Markus Leandersson (72-75-74=221) each shot five-over-par and tied for 36th. Sophomore Tanner Briele (76-76-73=225) and senior Anthony Reale (73-77-75=225) finished tied for 54th at nine-over-par.
The Pirates will compete in the 2008 Conference USA Championship in Texarkana, Ark. beginning Sunday, April 20.
