ATHENS, Ga. - No. 37 East Carolina fired a second round score of 297 moving up to 11th place with one round to go at the NCAA Women's Golf East Regional at the University of Georgia Golf Course.
The Pirates, who entered second round action in 19th, recorded the second-lowest round of the day following Florida's 295. The Gators, who are at 585, own a three-shot lead over top-seeded Duke (588) entering Saturday's final round. South Carolina is third at 594, largely due to the efforts of individual leader Benedicte Toumpsin. She shot 2-under 70 and is at 6-under through 36 holes. First-round leader Sara-Maude Juneau of Louisville and Amanda Blumenherst of Duke are tied for second at 3-under.
ECU's Amber Littman shot the second-lowest individual round of the day, a one-under 71, and is tied for 25th place at seven-over par (151). Senior Emelie Lind (150) is tied for 18th after carding a round of 74. Sophomore Abby Bools (154) is tied for 54th, while Colleen Estes (159 is tied for 79th and Ana Maria Puche is tied for 83rd at 160.
Toumpsin was paired Juneau, the first-round leader, and they battled for much of the day. Toumpsin held a one-shot lead before a birdie at No. 16 mixed with bogeys by Juneau at No. 16 and No. 18 gave her a cushion.
Rounding out the top 10 teams following the Gators, Blue Devils and Gamecocks are Auburn at 598, Georgia and Furman at 599, Wake Forest at 603, New Mexico at 605, Virginia at 606 and Louisville at 608
The top eight teams in the field and the top three individual finishers who are not members of those teams will advance to the NCAA Championships. New Mexico shot 297 on Friday to bolster its chances to return home and host the NCAAs on May 20-23 at its Championship Course in Albuquerque.
The top six teams will tee off for Saturday's final round beginning at 8:00 a.m., with teams 7-12 starting at 9:00. The remaining squads will play in the afternoon wave which begins at 12:30 p.m.
