ATHENS, Ga. - The No. 37 East Carolina women's golf team completed first round action at the 2008 NCAA Women's Golf East Regional at the University of Georgia Golf Course Thursday with a score of 314 and sits in 19th place.
Sophomore Abby Bools and senior Emelie Lind each posted opening round scores of 76 and are tied for 38th. Amber Littman is tied for 77th with a score of 80, while Ana Maria Puche (82) is in 87th and Colleen Estes (85)is tied for 100th.
Top-seeded Duke fired a 3-under 285 to grab a five-shot lead over NO. 2 Florida (290). After Florida, 11th-seeded South Carolina is third at 291, 12th-seeded Furman is fourth at 292 and 10th-seeded Louisville is fifth at 293. Auburn and Virginia are tied for sixth at 296, followed by Wake Forest at 298, Georgia at 299, New Mexico at 304, Missouri at 305, Vanderbilt and Georgia State both at 308, Indiana and Charleston Southern at 309 and Tennessee at 311.
The Blue Devils are three-time defending national champions and are attempting to become the first Division I program to win four consecutive national titles.
Louisville freshman Sara-Maude Juneau, who is currently ranked No. 145 in the Golfstat Cup and No. 135 in the Golfweek/Sagarin Performance Index, blistered the course to the tune of a career-low 67 en route to the top spot.
Juneau teed off from No. 10 and played the back half of the course first. The only blemish on her loop was a bogey-5 at No. 11. She moved back to even with a birdie at No. 13 and then also posted red numbers at No. 18, No. 3, No. 6, No. 7 and No. 9 en route to the clubhouse.
Juneau's loop was a shot better than both Duke's Amanda Blumenherst and South Carolina's Benedicte Toumpsin. Corrine Carr of Furman is fourth at 69, while Georgia's Krystle Caithness, Auburn's Cydney Clanton and Duke Kimberly Donovan are tied for fifth at 70. Carmen Perez of UNC Wilmington and Alexandra Phelps of New Mexico are tied for eighth at 71, with a pack of seven golfers tied for 10th at even-par.
The teams will flip tee times for Friday's second round, with the No. 13-21 seeds playing the morning and the No. 1-12 seeds teeing off beginning at 12:30 p.m. Georgia will start on hole No. 10 on Friday at 1:20 p.m.
The top eight teams in the field and the top three individual finishers who are not members of those teams will advance to the NCAA Championships on May 20-23 at the University of New Mexico's Championship Course in Albuquerque, N.M.
