IRVING, Texas - After serving as East Carolina's top finisher at the Wolfpack Invitational last weekend, freshman Zack Montijo was named the Conference USA Cross Country Male Athlete-of-the-Week, according to an announcement by the league office on Tuesday. It is the first Male Athlete-of-the-Week award for an East Carolina runner since Kyle MacKenzie had the honor on October 19, 2004.
Running in his first collegiate meet, Montijo's 5K time of 15:41 was good for an eighth-place overall finish and helped lead the Pirates to a second-place team finish in the 14-team field.
The Female Athlete-of-the-Week award was given, for the second consecutive week, to UAB sophomore Stephanie Gammon. Her 5K time of 18:39.04, good for 11th-place overall, led the team to a third-place finish at the Brooks Memphis Twilight in the 36-team invitational.
Montijo and the Pirates take this weekend off before returning to action as they host the ECU Pirates Invitational on Sept. 27.
