ECU Takes Third At Chip-N Club Invitational

Lincoln, Neb. -Junior Abby Bools carded a final round two-under-par 70 to help the East Carolina women's golf team to a third place finish at the 2008 Chip-N Club Invitational Tuesday afternoon. The event was being played at the par 72, 6,068-yard Wilderness Ridge Golf Course.
The Pirates (10-2) fired a final round 297, their best round of the invitational, finishing with a tournament score of 897 (301-299-297) - 13 shots behind tournament champion and host institution Nebraska (298-295-291=884). Arkansas-Little Rock claimed second place with an 888 (292-300-296), while UC Riverside (308-295-301=904) and Texas State (307-301-298=906) rounded out the top five.
"This was a good start to the season," said Head Coach Kevin Williams. "We have always struggled playing on Blue Grass, but I thought overall it was a good tournament for us. I was able to catch a glimpse of what our team will look like this season, and I really like what I saw."
Bools, who started the day tied for eighth, quickly moved up the leader board after carding three birdies on the front nine to sit two-under with nine holes to play. After a bogey on No. 11 dropped her to one-under for the round, the Hickory, N.C. native regrouped and birdied hole No. 14 to help secure her two-under 70.
The sophomore duo of Colleen Estes (77-75-74) and Amber Littman (74-72-80) claimed Top 15 finishes with tournament scores of 226. Ana Maria Puche carded a 54-hole score of 232 (74-79-79) to finish tied for 33rd.
A pair of freshman (Amy Otteson and Julia Strandberg) made the collegiate debuts at the Chip-N Club Invitational. Otteson finished tied for 46th with a tournament score of 235 (77-84-74), while Strandberg tied for 64th place as an individual with after rounds of 86, 81 and 78 (245).
Arkansas-Little Rock's Sara Wickstrom walked away with the individual title by birdeying the 18th hole to finish Tuesday's final round with a one-under-par 71 to close the tournament at 214 with medalist honors. Nebraska's Mary Kate Bird took second with a one-under-par 215, while Jennifer Bermingham (UC Riverside) claimed third with a score of 218.
ECU will be back in action on Oct. 6-7 at the Windy City Collegiate Classic, which will be held in Evanston, Ill.
