ECU To Host 2010 Women's Golf Regional

GREENVILLE, N.C. - East Carolina University has been selected as host of the 2010 NCAA Women's Golf East Regional, the NCAA Division I Women's Golf Committee announced earlier this month. The Pirates will play host to the East Regional Championships at the par-72, 6,348-yard Ironwood Country Club in Greenville.
"We are extremely honored in being selected to host the 2010 NCAA East Regional," ECU Head Coach Kevin Williams said. "I really appreciate the athletic administration's support of our program through their efforts to bid on this event. It will be a great regional and I know the teams competing will be impressed with the involvement and coordination of this tournament by our university, athletic department and community."
Heading into their ninth year of existence, the Pirates have made four appearances in the NCAA Regionals (2002-03, 2004-05, 2005-06 and 2007-08) and claimed its highest finish, 12th place, a year ago. During the 2004 season, former ECU standout Adrienne Millican participated in the NCAA Championships as an individual, placing in a tie for 34th out of 126 golfers.
"The NCAA Regional hosting opportunity is a testament to the wonderful golf community that exists in Greenville and specifically recognizes the hard work of Coach Kevin Williams and his ECU team members for creating a nationally competitive program in women's golf," ECU Director of Athletics Terry Holland said. "This event will, undoubtedly, bring some of the country's best collegiate players to our area."
Indiana University will serve as host to the Central Regional Championships at the Otter Creek Golf Club in Columbus, Ind., and Stanford University will host the West Regional Championships at the Stanford Golf Course in Stanford, Calif. All regional championships will be played May 6-8.
Twenty-one teams and eight at-large individual selections will participate in each regional with the eight lowest scoring teams, as well as the two lowest scoring individuals not on an advancing team, from each of the three regional championships advancing to the NCAA Division I Women's Golf Championship. The championship will be held May 18-21 at the Country Club of Landfall in Wilmington, N.C., with the University of North Carolina, Wilmington serving as the host school.
"We are looking forward to being the host golf course for the NCAA Women's East Regional Tournament in 2010," Ironwood Golf Pro John LaMonica said. "Our management team, members and owner are committed to the success of the ECU golf teams and we feel that this is a major step in aiding the team on their path to the NCAA Championship Finals, not only as a competing team but as a championship team."
After a winter layoff, the Pirates will return to action Monday, Feb. 9 when they travel to Palos Verdes, Calif. to participate in the Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge, which is hosted by Ohio State University.
