SAPPHIRE, N.C. - East Carolina finished the first round of the Hummingbird Intercollegiate with a total team tally of 290 to conclude the day in seventh place.
The two-day Hummingbird Intercollegiate, which is being hosted by Western Carolina, is being contested at the 6,767-yard, par 71 Country Club of Sapphire Valley.
Kentucky carded a team first round score of five-under-par 279 to lead the event by three strokes as a team entering the second round on Tuesday.
The Wildcats' team round of 279 bested second-place Furman (282) after the first day. Akron, Western Carolina and Winthrop finished the first day tied for third place with a team round of 286, while Vanderbilt carded a 289 to finish one stroke ahead of ECU.
The Pirates' David Watkins is one of six players that carded a three-under-par 68 Monday to trail tournament leader Garland Ferrell of Furman by one stroke.
ECU sophomore Harold Varner posted a two-over 73 on Monday to stand tied for 36th in the 102-golfer field. Junior Warren Straub fired a three-over 74 to finish the day tied for 51st with freshman Michael Marshburn finishing one stroke behind his teammate in 61st.
The final 18 holes will begin with fixed tee times beginning at 9:00 am on the front nine and 9:05 am on the back.
