SAPPHIRE, N.C. --- The East Carolina men's golf team finished tied for second place at the 2009 Hummingbird Intercollegiate Tuesday to complete its fall schedule. The Pirates finished three strokes behind tournament champion Furman, which erased a six-stroke deficit over the final six holes to rally past Kentucky.
The Pirates, which trailed the Wildcats by 11 strokes heading into Tuesday's final round, fired a final round team total of four-under-par 280 to finish with a two-over 570, while UK carded a seven-over 279 and fell out of the lead. Furman shot one-over on the day, but finished the tournament with a one-under 567 to win the championship.
ECU sophomore David Watkins finished in third place with a four-under 138. The Hamlet, N.C. native shot three-under Monday before he birdied the course Tuesday. Furman's Garland Ferrell carded rounds of 67 and 68 for a two-day total of 135 to win by two strokes over Akron's Lucas Murray at 137.
Pirate sophomore Harold Varner shot one-under Tuesday to finish tied for 20th with a score of one-over 143. Fellow classmate Jake Colley recorded his lowest round of the season, firing a five-under 66 with a final tally of three-over 145. Freshman Michael Marshburn finished at seven-over, while junior Warren Straub completed the 36-hole event at 10-over.
East Carolina will resume competition on February 8 at the Jacksonville Invitational.
