Pirates Finish 11th At Spring Opener

ORLANDO, Fla. - East Carolina shot one-over as team during the final round of the Rio Pinar Invitational Tuesday and earned an 11th place finish at its spring season opening tournament. The men's golf team finished at 20-over 884, moving up two places in the final standings after being in 13th through two rounds of play Monday.
The Pirates finished 31 strokes behind tournament champion and host UCF. The Knights shot an eight-under 280 on the final 18 holes to repeat as tournament champion. Texas-Arlington finished second overall at one-over 865, followed by Louisville with a six-over 870 in third and Augusta State, Vanderbilt and Ole Miss in a three-way tie for fourth-place with a seven-over 871.
UCF's Blayne Barber claimed individual medalist honors, carding a 12-under 204. UT Arlington's Bobby Massa finished two strokes behind Barber at 10-under 206.
Sophomore Warren Straub posted ECU's highest finish of the tournament, tying for 18th with a two-over 218. Straub carded a two-under 70 Tuesday after shooting four-over in the first two rounds.
Freshman Jake Colley recorded the team's lowest score of the final round with a three-under 69. Colley finished tied for 35th with at five-over 221.
Freshman Harold Varner shot two-over in the final round at finished with an eight-over 224 in 53rd place, while junior Tripp Brizendine shot four-over today to finish at 10-over.
The ECU men's golf team returns to the links Monday, March 9, when it participates in the Cleveland Golf Classic in Aiken, S.C. The 54-hole tournament will last through Tuesday, March 10.
