Pinehurst, N.C. - The Pinehurst Challenge, originally slated for Mar. 2-3 at Pinehurst No. 6, in Pinehurst, N.C., has been cancelled due to inclement weather. The East Carolina women's golf team, as well as 19 other teams, was scheduled to participate at the par-71 5,967-yd. course.
The decision to cancel the 36-hole event was made after snow and ice blanketed the area yesterday evening. It was determined that the course would not be playable Monday with temperatures hovering all day around freezing and no chance for the snow and ice to melt.
Officials decided that the course would not be ready Tuesday as well due to temperatures dropping to the teens later on this evening and not reaching above freezing until that afternoon.
The Pirates (54-27-2) will be back in action on March 23 when they travel to Wilmington, N.C. to participate in the UNCW/ Lady Seahawk Intercollegiate.
