Pirates Tied For Fourth At C-USA Championship

SORRENTO, Fla. --- A trio of East Carolina golfers shot even-par to lead the Pirates into a tie for fourth place with a one-over 289 after 18 holes at the 2009 Conference USA Men's Golf Championship at RedTail Golf Club. UCF leads the overall team standings after the first round with an overall nine-under 279.
Pirate seniors Markus Leandersson and Andre Thorsen along with freshman David Watkins each carded a 72 Sunday to tie for 18th, four strokes behind tournament leaders Blayne Barber of UCF and Zach Sucher of UAB, each of whom fired a four-under 68.
ECU freshman Jake Colley is tied for 25th at one-over, while sophomore Warren Straub is tied for 41st at four-over.
Sucher, the defending champion, has help from UAB teammate John Darby, who is currently tied for seventh after a two-under 70. However, three other UCF golfers are in the top 12. Simon Ward (three-under 69) is tied for third while David Johnson and Brad Schneider are both tied for 12th after shooting a 71 on the first 18 holes.
SMU (four-under 284) sits in second place on the team leaderboard after the first day. The Mustangs were led by Draegen Majors and Aaron Stewart, who are both tied for seventh at 2-under 70. Defending champion UAB is third at 286 (-2).
Fifty-five golfers were in action Sunday, playing in nearly perfect conditions in central Florida as the temperature reached 80 degrees by midday.
Four players - Brady Shivers (Houston), Simon Ward (UCF), Michael Whitehead (Rice) and Jack Belote (Rice) - are just one shot behind Barber and Sucher.
