GAINESVILLE, Fla. -The East Carolina women's golf team completed round three of the NCAA East Regional Saturday afternoon falling three strokes short of qualifying for the 2009 NCAA Championships taking ninth place with a team score of 892 (+ 52).
The ninth place finish is ECU's highest ever finish in the NCAA Regionals, topping their 12th place finish from a year ago. Junior Abby Bools led the way for the Pirates in the event claiming a share of 19th place with a three-day score of 219 (68-75-76) for her ninth top-20 placement of the season.
Ana Maria Puche bounced back from rough second round to card two-over par 72 for a three-day event score of 221 (68-81-72) taking home a share of 30th place. Amber Littman finished tied for 58th with a event score of 227 (73-78-76), while Amy Otteson (74-79-75) tied for 63rd and Colleen Estes (82-81-73) wound up in 88th place.
"It's really tough finishing three strokes out of making the championships," said Head Coach Kevin Williams. "We played inconsistent all season and it happened again this weekend at the regionals. I am proud of the way we bounced back after a miserable day on Thursday and looking forward to next season with the entire team back and us hosting the 2010 NCAA East Regionals at Ironwood Country Club."
University of Denver (862) took the Regional title with rounds of 287, 296 and 279 (one-under par), which was followed by Alabama (866), Tennessee (873), Virginia (874), Tulane (876), Duke (881), North Carolina (881) and Georgia (889) all of who advance to the NCAA Championships next week in Owings Mills, MD.
The Pirates (108-43-2) finished ahead of seven top-50 teams including No. 7 Auburn, No, 23 Vanderbilt and No. 30 Florida.
