Soccer Plays Coastal Carolina To 0-0 Tie

CONWAY, S.C. – The East Carolina soccer team played to a 0-0 tie Friday night against Coastal Carolina. The deadlock gives the Pirates a 4-1-2 record this season while the Chanticleers move to 1-8-1.
ECU held a 24-11 advantage in shots and a 12-4 edge in corner kicks, but could not get anything past Coastal Carolina goalkeeper Karen Pavlick. For Pirate goalkeeper Berit Hansen, it was her second shutout in as many games.
Kimmy Cummings and Bailey Wilcox led the way for the East Carolina offense, tallying five shots each. Jessica Woodward and Rachel Wechsler each picked up three shots.
Coastal Carolina tested Hansen right at the start, as Anna Tupy took a shot on goal just 26 seconds in that Hansen turned aside. The Pirates took the next two shots on goal, both by Chrissy Gratz, at 5:05 and 15:05, but Chanticleer keeper Pavlick made two saves.
The defenses took control over the next 25 minutes, as neither team recorded another shot on goal until ECU’s Caty Butler at 40:04. Coastal Carolina fired one more shot in the half, at 42:25, but Hansen made the save. The Pirates’ Cummings had the final scoring opportunity of the period 20 seconds later and was stopped by Pavlick.
In the second half, the East Carolina offense started fast, recording six shots in the first 15:05. Wilcox took three, Wechsler two and Amanda Malkiewicz one. In the same span, Coastal Carolina took two shots, but only one on goal, by Samantha Teijelo.
Maggie Wilding had a scoring opportunity for Coastal Carolina at 63:03, but Hansen again made the save. The ECU offense responded with another series of shots, taking five between 66:11 and 75:05. Woodward had the lone shot on goal during that span, at 70:18.
Coastal Carolina had perhaps its best scoring chance at 83:17 when Tupy shot, Hansen made the save but left the rebound for Tupy, who shot again but missed wide left.
The Pirates had the final two scoring opportunities in regulation as they took a corner kick at 87:48. Woodward took a shot, but Pavlick made the save. Wechsler fired the final shot of the period, at 89:45 but was turned aside again by Pavlick. ECU outshot the Chanticleers 13-6 in the second half and recorded eight corners to Coastal Carolina’s two, but could not convert.
In the first overtime, Cummings recorded the only shot on goal for either team at 94:02. The Pirate defense held the Chanticleers without a shot in the initial extra session.
East Carolina had both scoring opportunities in the second overtime as Malkiewicz and Hali Oughton recorded shots on goal 33 seconds apart at 104:38 and 105:11, but both were stopped by Pavlick. Those were the final shots of the contest.
The Pirates play their final non-conference game of the season at 2 p.m. Sunday against UNC Wilmington for Beach Day at Bunting Field. Fans are encouraged to bring beach towels and chairs and will be allowed to sit on the grass surrounding the track.
