WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – In a match-up of undefeated teams, Wake Forest’s Jill Hutchinson scored two goals to lead the host past East Carolina 4-0 Sunday afternoon. The Pirates trailed only 1-0 until the No. 17 Demon Deacons scored three goals between 53:31 and 68:35 to put the game out of reach. The victory keeps Wake Forest undefeated on the year at 6-0-0 while ECU falls to 3-1-0.
Hutchinson put Wake Forest ahead 1-0 two minutes into the game when she got past hard-charging ECU starting goalie Jen Kurowicki and sent the ball into the open net. Kurowicki made three saves in the next 13 minutes to keep the Pirates in the game.
East Carolina struggled on offense in the first half, recording just one shot, at 27:17 by Amanda Malkiewicz. Kurowicki made her final save of the game at 42:47 on a shot by Kaley Fountain.
"We played hard but Wake is a very good team," head coach Rob Donnenwirth said. "There is no substitute for playing games like this against such high-quality opponents."
To begin the second half, the teams recorded a shot apiece within the first seven minutes. Hutchinson then scored again, at 53:31, giving Wake Forest a 2-0 advantage. Bianca D’Agostino started the play with a shot that second-half goalie Berit Hansen deflected, but Hutchinson collected the rebound and put it past Hansen. Hutchinson became the first player to score two goals in a game against ECU since UCF’s Courtney Whidden on Nov. 7, 2007.
D’Agostino put Wake Forest ahead 3-0 at 67:32 when she snuck a shot inside the right post from 14 yards away. Lindsey Holman-Kelley tallied the final goal for the Demon Deacons at 68:35 when she found the left side of the net from 16 yards out.
The Pirates recorded just three shots in the game with Bailey Wilcox’s at 52:14 being the only one on goal. Kurowicki made four saves while Hansen recorded three.
"Wake Forest wore us down with their possession," Donnenwirth stated. "I was concerned about that going into today with this being the first time this season we played two games on the weekend."
East Carolina's next game is against another ACC opponent, N.C. State. The two teams square off in Raleigh Friday at 7 p.m. It will be the fourth meeting in the series, with ECU leading 2-1. The programs last met August 26, 2000, in Raleigh, when the Pirates won 1-0.
