CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - After taking last weekend off, the East Carolina men's and women's cross country teams returned to action Friday at the Panorama Farms Invitational, hosted by the University of Virginia. The men placed fifth of eight squads while the women finished fourth of seven. The event was won by Duke's men and Texas Tech's women, both of which are ranked in the top 10 nationally.
On the men's side, sophomore Dillon Hawley paced the squad for the first time this season. He finished the 8K in a season-best 25:14.02, good for 29th place overall.
Not far behind was junior Zack Montijo, who clocked out in 25:24.92 to claim 34th place. Sophomore Cory Hampshire turned in the final top-50 finish for the men as he checked in 43rd with a time of 25:48.07.
Sophomore Grant Burress and junior Daniel Porter narrowly missed out on top-50 performances as Burress came in 51st (26:03.06) and Porter 54th (26:08.24).
Rounding out the Pirate men were freshman Chase Miller (26:35.48/63rd), sophomore Antonio Palmer (27:45.08/78th) and freshman Jakub Trzasalski (27:46.66/79th), who made his ECU debut.
Without junior Brittany Copeland running for the women, junior Tara Wilson paced the Pirates, placing 15th overall. She finished the 6K with a personal-best time of 22:06.28. The mark was also the seventh fastest in East Carolina history.
Trailing close behind was freshmen Bjork Olsen, who completed her first career 6K in 22:42.86, good for 18th place. The time was the 19th-best 6K in program history.
Junior Amanda Lapp was just one second shy of her career best at 22:58.80, good for 21st place. Freshman Chelsea Hollingsworth followed with the final top-25 finish on the squad. She checked in 23rd overall with a time of 23:00.25.
Sophomore Britney Kott returned to action for the first time since the season-opening meet and placed 31st with a time of 23:21.08. Classmate Stacey Gonzalez was right behind in 33rd (23:36.26).
Freshman Amanda Tomlin (24:06.63/47th), running her first career 6K, and sophomore Brooke Kott (24:27.22/50th) turned in the final top-50 finishes for the Pirates.
Freshman Kaylee Bythell clocked out in 24:31.01 in place 52nd. Senior Nicole Briggs ran in her first meet of the year and claimed 57th with a time of 24:52.87.
Junior Andrea Barletta (24:59.99/59th) and freshman Kelley Miko (25:19.44/61st) were the final Pirate runners.
The Pirates return to action next Friday, Oct. 22, at the Mount Olive College Invitational in their final tune-up before the Conference USA Championship Nov. 1.
