LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Running at what is regarded as the largest collegiate meet in the South, the East Carolina men’s and women’s cross country teams placed 29th of 38 and 12th of 35, respectively, Saturday at the Greater Louisville Classic. The event, held at E.P. 'Tom' Sawyer State Park, featured 97 NCAA Division I, Division II and Division III as well as NAIA and NJCCA schools from 20 states.
The men had six of their seven runners set personal-best times while the women set five career marks. Junior Zack Montijo paced the men, coming in 79th overall while classmate Brittany Copeland led the women with a 25th-place finish.
Montijo finished the 8K race in a career-best 24:56.96. The time was the 14th fastest in program history. It was also Montijo’s third time in four meets pacing the Pirates.
Sophomore Cory Hampshire finished second to Montijo on the squad and 105th overall with a personal-best performance. Hampshire clocked out at 25:12.37, just five seconds shy of entering the program’s top-20 list.
The Pirates’ claimed spots 174 and 175 with sophomores Grant Burress and Daniel Porter. Burress’ time was 25:43.44, more than one minute better than his top 8K from a year ago. Porter finished in a personal-best 25:44.08.
Sophomore Dillon Hawley was the last runner to turn in a top-215 performance, checking in 211th with a time of 26:03.77.
Rounding out the ECU runners were freshman Chase Miller (253rd/26:30.32) and sophomore Antonio Palmer (302nd/27:32.10). In Miller’s second career 8K, he ran more than a minute and a half faster than he did at last Friday’s ECU Pirate Invitational. Palmer’s time was also a personal best by nearly 20 seconds.
For the East Carolina women, Copeland ran the third-best 5K in program history with a time of 17:40.13. It was her top time by five seconds and she now owns two of the top-five performances on the all-time list.
Junior Tara Wilson was not far behind, finishing in a career-best 17:56.60 to claim 45th overall. The time tied Copeland’s from last week’s ECU Pirate Invitational for ninth on the program list.
The Pirates had two more runners finish in the top 120 with freshmen Bjork Olsen (106th/18:34.64) and Chelsea Hollingsworth (117th/18:39.93). Olsen’s and Hollingsworth’s third career 5Ks were their best yet, cutting 12 seconds off their previous top times.
Junior Amanda Lapp checked in 130th overall with a time of 18:46.44. Finishing 10 seconds later was freshman Amanda Tomlin (18:56.95), who claimed 167th place. It was Tomlin’s first time that broke the 19-minute mark.
