POWELLS POINT, N.C. --- The East Carolina men's golf team concluded the first round of the Old Dominion/Outer Banks Intercollegiate at the par-72, 6,535-yard Kilmarlic Golf Course in first-place with a total team score of 18-under 270.
The Pirates hold a six-stroke lead over second-place Liberty, which fired a 12-under par 276. Richmond is in third-place at 10-under followed by William & Mary at eight-under and Louisville at five-under.
ECU junior Harold Varner is tied with Liberty's Max McCay for the overall individual lead at seven-under. Varner birdied four of the final four holes to tie his career-low round of 65, which ranks as the second-lowest 18-hole score in school history.
A trio of Pirates are in the top six after one round. Redshirt freshman Ryan Eibner is tied for fourth-place at five-under, while sophomore Zach Edmondson is tied for sixth at four-under. Eibner recorded an eagle on No. 16 to drop from three-under to five-under before paring the final two holes. Edmondson posted an eagle on No. 4 and finished his round with five birdies.
Junior David Watkins is tied for 17th at two-under with senior Warren Straub tied for 38th at one-over.
