POWELLS POINT, N.C. --- The East Carolina men's golf team extended its lead to 16 strokes on the second day of competition at the Old Dominion/Outer Banks Intercollegiate. The Pirates carded a second round team score of six-under 288 to move to 24-under through 36 holes.
Liberty maintained its second-place position, but shot four-over as a team to fall to eight-under after posting a 12-under in the first round. Louisville and Richmond are tied for third-place at six-under followed by William & Mary at even-par.
ECU junior Harold Varner continued his stellar play Monday. After shooting an opening round 65, Varner fired a 66 in round two to move into sole possession of first-place in the individual standings at 13-under. Furman's Matthew Broome is in second-place, three strokes behind Varner with Liberty's Robert Karlsson in third-place six strokes off the pace.
The Pirates have four players in the top 12 of the individual standings. Junior David Watkins is tied for ninth at three-under after shooting one-under Monday. Sophomore Zach Edmondson and redshirt freshman Ryan Eibner are tied for 12th at two-under.
Senior Warren Straub moved into the top 20 by shooting one-under to bring his two round total to an even-par 144. Straub is tied for 18th.
