RALEIGH, N.C. --- After holding a two-stroke advantage through the first 18 holes of competition, East Carolina finds itself in fifth-place following two rounds of play at the Wolfpack Intercollegiate being held at the par-71, 7,358-yard Lonnie Poole Golf Course on the Centennial Campus of North Carolina State University.
The Pirates shot a four-under 280 in the first round, but carded a six-over 290 in round two to fall 12 shots behind 10th-ranked Duke, which fired a nine-under 275 this afternoon after shooting one-under during the morning round.
At 10-under (283-275=558), the Blue Devils hold a three-stroke lead over second-place and 18th-ranked N.C. State (285-276=561) and a seven-stroke advantage over third-place Maryland (282-283=565). No. 23 Wake Forest (290-277=567) leads ECU by three strokes for fourth-place.
The Pirates (280-290=570) hold a seven-stroke advantage over sixth-place Georgia State (282-295=577) and a 10-shot lead over seventh-place and 36th-ranked UNC Wilmington. ECU also stands 14 strokes in front of Conference USA rival Memphis (297-287=594) and 17 ahead of 35th-ranked Campbell (289-298=587).
Individually, ECU junior David Watkins (68-70=138) is tied with three other golfers for second-place at four-under. Watkins began the day by carding a three-under 68 to hold a share of the lead with Georgia State's Brent Paul at the end of the first round.
N.C. State's Albin Choi, who was one stroke behind Watkins and Paul after round one, carded a five-under 66 during the second round to assume the individual lead after 36 holes at seven-under (69-66=135).
Watkins shot one-under during the afternoon to finish the day with the Pirates' lowest score. Redshirt freshman Ryan Eibner carded a 36-hole tally of one-under (71-70=141) and is tied for ninth-place.
ECU sophomore Zach Edmondson stands alone in 24th-place at two-over (71-73=144) with junior Harold Varner tied for 36th at five-over. Varner was even through the first 18 holes, but shot five-over in the second round. Senior Warren Straub sits three strokes behind his junior teammate at eight-over (73-76=149).
