LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Running against a field with numerous nationally ranked opponents, the East Carolina men’s and women’s cross country teams finished their seasons at the NCAA Southeast Regional at E.P. “Tom” Sawyer State Park Saturday morning. The men’s team came in 23rd out of 34 squads while the women placed 21st of 37. For the second-straight year, Dillon Hawley and Tara Wilson paced their respective teams at the regional competition.
The men improved two spots from the 2009 event and turned in the program's best performance since coming in 17th in 2004. The women’s team made a three-spot jump from last season and had its highest placement since claiming 17th place in 2008. Wilson also ran the fifth-best 6K in program history with a time of 21:40.3.
Hawley, a sophomore, was the top men’s finisher for the second time in the last three meets. He completed the 10K race in 32:32.88, good for 71st place. Hawley’s time was the 13th best in program history and only the fourth to break into the ECU top-20 rankings since 2004.
Junior Zack Montijo was next to cross the finish line for the men, placing 102nd overall with a time of 33:04.12. Montijo’s time also earned him a place on ECU’s top 10K-performance list, as he turned in the 20th-best mark.
Sophomore Grant Burress was the final Pirate who placed in the top 150, coming in 110th after completing the race in a career-best 33:16.56. Burress jumped 76 spots and cut nearly a minute and 40 seconds off his time from the 2009 meet.
Redshirt sophomore Daniel Porter finished in 154th place with a time of 34:08.8. It was the first 10K race of his career. Sophomore Cory Hampshire did not trail far behind, coming in 161st in 34:16.95.
Freshman Chase Miller was the final ECU runner, placing 184th (34:54.49) in his first NCAA Regional event.
On the women’s side, Wilson, a junior, had a career-best race, pacing the team and placing 54th overall. She improved 13 spots from last year’s regional performance and 28 places from her freshman year.
Junior Brittany Copeland finished second on the squad and 83rd overall with a time of 22:18.2, the 15th-best mark in ECU history. It was the first time in her career she did not lead the Pirate women’s team.
Freshman Chelsea Hollingsworth claimed 138th place, timing out with a career-best 22:57.3. Junior Amanda Lapp was close behind, turning in the team’s final top-150 performance. She finished in 22:58.5, good for 140th place.
Sophomore Stacey Gonzalez was the Pirates’ next finisher, coming in 155th in a personal-best 23:07.4, cutting 20 seconds off her previous low. Classmate Brooke Kott trailed 13 spots behind to take 168th with a time of 23:20.7.
Freshman Bjork Olsen wrapped up the ECU contingent, finishing in 23:41.1 to take 190th place.
William & Mary’s men’s team, ranked 19th in the country, won the team championship with a total of 85 points. It was the Tribe’s third-straight regional crown, earning it a 14th consecutive NCAA appearance. Finishing second and claiming the other automatic berth to the NCAA Championship was No. 23 Duke. Individually for the men, Samuel Chelanga, a senior from Liberty, took home his second-straight title, finishing in 29:55.73.
For the women, 12th-ranked Virginia clinched the championship with 65 points to send the Cavaliers on their fifth trip to the NCAA Championship in the last six years. The University of North Carolina took second with 100 points to earn the other automatic berth. Individually, N.C. State freshman Laura Hoer won the championship with a time of 19:54.5.
For East Carolina, the possibilities look bright for next fall as neither the men nor women had a senior running at today’s regional competition.
