
Women's Golf Inks Two In Early Signing Period

GREENVILLE, N.C. - East Carolina Head Women's Golf Coach Kevin Williams has announced that Katie Kirk and Devan Murphy have each signed a National Letter of Intent to play golf for the Pirates during the 2011-12 season.
"We are extremely happy with the 2011 recruiting class," said Williams. "Not only are both young ladies talented golfers but they epitomize the term student-athlete. The impact of this class on our program will be profound and we are excited about them helping us continue to build on the winning tradition we have in our women's golf program."
Katie Kirk - North Mecklenburg HS (Davidson, N.C.)
Currently ranked No. 2 in the Carolina's Golf Association North Carolina junior girls rankings ... Qualified for 2010 U.S. Junior Girls Championship ... Runner-up at the 2010 North-South Junior Championships, Joe Cheves Junior Championships and 4A High School State Championships ... Member of the Carolinas Team (2010) ... First-team All-Carolinas (2008-09) ... Took home first place at the 2010 Precision Girls Championship, where she fired a final round score of 67 ... Won the 2010 Order of Merit for the Peggy Kirk Bell Tour.
Coach Williams' Comments: "Katie is a tremendous golf talent with a great golf resume. She has continued to grow each year as a golfer. On top of that, she is an excellent student ranking in the top-10 in her high school class. We are excited about the impact Katie will make as a student-athlete here at East Carolina University."
Devan Murphy - Charlotte Catholic HS (Charlotte, N.C.)
Claimed the 2008 Dicks Sporting Goods Tour Points Championship ... Recorded a pair of top-five finishes on the Peggy Kirk Bell Tour in 2010 ... Four-year letterwinnner at Charlotte Catholic ... Two-time team captain ... Three-time Charlotte Weekly Golf Super Team member.
Coach Williams' Comments: "Devan has a lot of raw ability with the game and we are very excited to see how her game will progress in our program. She is very athletic and making some nice strides with her game. Once her golf experience and athletic ability match up, Devan will make a wonderful impact on our program. In addition to being a talented golfer, Devan is a wonderful student as well."
The Pirates finished the fall season with a 39-15-1 record with included a win at the 2010 UNCG Starmount Fall Classic, the 19th team title in its 11th year of existence. ECU will return to action Feb. 13-15 when they participate in the UCF Challenge in Orlando, Fla.
