ECU Finishes Strong At Furman Intercollegiate

Greenville, S.C. -- East Carolina posted the second-lowest team tally of the third round Sunday to move up six places and post an 11th place finish at the 41st Annual Furman Intercollegiate, which was held at the par-72, 6,994-yard Furman University Golf Course. Only team champion Clemson registered a lower round than the Pirates on the final day of competition.
The Tigers carded a final round 282 to rally from a three-stroke deficit to claim the team title Chattanooga's Steven Fox drained a birdie putt on his final hole to share individual medalist honors with the Tigers' Ben Martin at six-under par.
Trailing by two strokes, Fox (70-68-72=210) capped his round with a birdie at No. 18. Martin (70-71-69=210), playing in the final group with Fox, posted a bogey after a shot out of bounds and settled for a share of the tournament title after a potential playoff was cancelled due to darkness and wet course conditions. The pair finished five strokes ahead of third place Corbin Mills (72-76-67=215) of Clemson who tallied the low round of the day with a five-under 67.
The Tigers (289-294-282=865), three strokes behind Chattanooga (289-291-299=879) entering Sunday's final round, finished 11 strokes ahead of the rest of the field over the final 18 holes to take a 14-stroke victory over the Mocs. Furman (305-290-298=893) placed third while Western Carolina, Kennesaw State and Old Dominion rounded out the top five.
ECU junior Warren Straub carded the best round of the day for the Pirates with an even-par 72, his best round of the event. Straub finished at 16-over (81-79-72=232).
Sophomore David Watkins fired a two-over 74 Sunday to finish tied for 20th at eight-over (71-79-74=224). Jake Colley also carded a two-over 74 on the final 18 holes to finish at nine-over (74-76-74=225), to tie for 28th. Harold Varner posted his best score of the event with a one-over 73 Sunday and finished at 13-over (77-79-73=229).
