RALEIGH, N.C. --- The East Carolina men's golf team moved up four spots Saturday to finish tied with VCU for eighth-place at the Wolfpack Intercollegiate, played this weekend at the Lonnie Poole Golf Course on N.C. State's Centennial Campus.
The Pirates, ranked 68th in the most recent Golf Weekly rankings, finished in front of five teams (No. 31 Wake Forest, No. 47 Michigan, No. 56 UNC Wilmington, No. 59 Virginia Tech and No. 64 New Orleans) that were ranked ahead of them. ECU posted its lowest round of the tournament Saturday with a score of six-over-par. The Pirates collected a three-round team aggregate score of 890 (303-297-290).
East Carolina's top performer in the event was Harold Varner, who concluded his efforts tied for 12th with three others with a three-round tally of five-over 218 (77-69-72). Varner was the only Pirate in the 91-player field to finish in the top 40.
North Carolina took first place honors, winning by seven strokes after finishing at eight-over 860 (298-280-282). Duke was second at 15-over (296-290-281=867) followed by N.C. State at 20-over (294-291-287=872), Florida State at 24-over (303-286-287=876) and Purdue at 33-over (306-292-287=885) to round out the top five.
Duke's Adam Long earned individual medalist honors, as his birdie on No. 17 gave him the one-stroke win. Long finished the tournament at one-over (214), and shot a three-under (68) in the final round to finish one stroke better than four golfers.
ECU freshman Michael Marshburn carded a three-over 74 Saturday to finish at 12-over (75-76-74=225). Sophomore David Watkins posted his best round of the 54-hole event with an even-par 71 Saturday and finished at 14-over (77-79-71=227). Junior Warren Straub also carded a 14-over (74-75-78=27). Sophomore Jake Colley fired a two-over Saturday to rebound from a tough opening two rounds to finish at 20-over (83-77-73=233).
The Pirates will return to the links April 25 in the opening round of the 2010 Conference USA Championship in Sorrento, Fla.
