ECU Claims Tri-Match At Ironwood

GREENVILLE, N.C. - The East Carolina women's golf team carded a 36-hole score of 585 (293-292) to take first place at the 2010 Tri-Match with No. 3 Duke and No. 30 South Carolina at Ironwood Golf Club Saturday afternoon. With the win, the Pirates finish the 2010 season with a record of 102-64-1 and claim their first ever win over a top-5 nationally-ranked team.
Junior Amber Littman led the way for the Pirates with a five-under par 139 (71-68) to earn medalist honors and take home her first top-10 finish of the year and second career tournament win. The Stoney Creek, N.C. native led the field of 16 with nine birdies and in par-5 scoring (4.38), while carding 23 pars.
Abby Bools took third with an even-par 144 (73-71) and made a strong case for getting invited to the NCAA Regionals as an individual, which will be held May 6-8. Amy Otteson (80-74) and Ana Maria Puche (75-79) finished tied for 11th, while Colleen Estes (74-81=155) was 13th and Meghan Moore (79-85=164) took 15th as an individual.
"I could not be more proud of our team for their fight and determination they have shown over the last two week's in the Conference USA Championships and today," said Head Coach Kevin Williams. "I'm not sure if we have done enough in the latter part of the year to overcome some of our bad tournaments, but picking up a pair of wins against two top-30 programs puts us on the bubble for getting into the NCAA Regionals.
"Our selection into post-season is now in the hands of the national committee, which is not where we should have been but it is the hand we dealt. If the team is not selected, I feel good about Abby's chances to make it as an individual. She beat four players ranked in the top 100 today including the No. 8 player in Duke's Lindy Duncan."
South Carolina (588) finished three strokes behind the Pirates, while Duke (594) was nine strokes behind in third place.
Kim Donavan (142) of Duke took second place and the South Carolina duo of Katie Burnett and Corrine Carr finished fourth with a 36-hole score of 145 to round out the top five.
The Pirates will learn their fate for NCAA post-season play on Monday, Apr. 26. The selection committee will hold a conference call at 4 p.m. (EDT) and will select 24 teams in each of the three regions as well as a total of nine individuals to be placed in each region.
