SEC Showcase On Day One Of The East Regional

GREENVILLE, N.C. --- Second-seeded Auburn carded an eight-under-par 280 Thursday to lead the 24-team field at the 2010 NCAA Women's Golf East Regional held at the 6,325-yard, par-72 Ironwood Golf and Country Club. The Tigers hold a one stroke lead over West Coast Conference champion Pepperdine (281).
Teams from the Southeastern Conference (SEC) dominated opening round play, claiming four of the top five spots. South Carolina and Tennessee are tied for third-place at five-under (283). Florida trails its conference brethren by one stroke and stands alone in fifth-place.
The top eight teams in the region advance to the NCAA Championship held at the Country Club of Landfall in Wilmington, N.C., May 18-21.
Tulane, East Tennessee State and Texas Tech are tied for sixth-place at three-under -par. TCU was the only other team to shoot less than par and finished in ninth-place at one-under.
Third-ranked Duke is tied with Colonial Athletic Association champion Georgia State at 10-over-par 290, followed by Vanderbilt (292) in 12th and host East Carolina and Chattanooga tied for 13th at five-over 293.
East Tennessee State sophomore Nina Muehl fired a career-low round of eight-under-par 64 to assume a three-stroke lead over a trio of players. Muehl birdied eight holes and pared the other 10 to record just her second round under 70 this season.
Pepperdine's Danielle Kang and Jessica Wallace are tied for second with South Carolina's Katie Burnett, who each carded a season-low round of five-under-par 67. Carlie Yadloczky of Auburn finished four strokes off the lead at four-under-par in fifth-place.
A total of 20 golfers shot less than par Thursday.
The second round of the tournament is scheduled to begin at 8 a.m. Friday morning
