IRVING, Texas - East Carolina graduate student Jarrett Newby has been awarded one of 12 Jim Castañeda Postgraduate Scholarship Awards, according to an announcement by Conference USA Commissioner Britton Banowsky Tuesday.
Newby is one of two track and field recipients in 2010, joining LaKendra Thames of UCF.
Newby earned All-Conference USA honors three times during his career in track and field, while also serving as a captain to both the men's cross country and track and field teams. He was named the 2010 ECU Most Outstanding Male Scholar-Athlete after earning United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Academic All-America honors in 2009. The Mount Holly, N.C., native graduated Cum Laude with a Bachelor's of Science degree in exercise physiology in 2009 and is currently pursuing a Master's in business administration.
This is the second year the award has been named for Dr. Castañeda, who served Rice University for 46 years as an educator, coach and Faculty Athletics Representative before he passed away in November of 2008. The conference annually presents the $4,000 awards to graduates as selected by the C-USA Faculty Athletics Representatives and approved by the Board of Directors.
