BURLINGTON, Iowa --- The East Carolina men's golf team concluded the Second Annual Golfweek Conference Challenge at the par 72, 7,360-yard Spirit Hollow Golf Club as the 10th-place team.
The Pirates ended the final round Tuesday by carding their best round of the tournament with a 285. Their third round tally left them with a three-day total of 882 (290-307-285). ECU began the final round in 13th place, but shot three-under as team to move up three places.
East Carolina finished ahead of two strokes ahead of Big West champion UC-Irvine and 16 strokes in front of Southern Conference champion Furman. The Pirates also finished above NCAA Regional participants Eastern Michigan by eight strokes and VCU by 21 strokes.
ECU junior Harold Varner was the lone Pirate to finish in the top 30 with a 26th-place finish. Varner carded a 54-hole total of two-over 218 (70-75-73). He ended the tournament with a final round score of one-over.
Senior Warren Straub (74-78-70) and junior Adam Stephenson (72-79-71) tied for 39th at six-over 222. Straub carded a final round score of two-under 70, while Stephenson finished the third round at one-under.
Junior David Watkins and redshirt freshman Ryan Eibner both shot par Tuesday. Eibner, competing in his first intercollegiate tournament, tied for 45th at eight-over 224 (77-75-72). Watkins completed the 54-hole event with a nine-over 225 (74-79-72).
Iowa captured the team title by 15 strokes over over place N.C. State. The Hawkeyes finished a three-round team score of 31-under 833 (268-285-280). The Wolfpack was second at 16-under (283-289-276) followed by Liberty in third-place at nine-under (289-295-271).
Iowa's Chris Brandt and Vince India shared individual medalist honors with a three round sore of 10-under 206. Brandt shot five-under 67 in the final round to pull even with India who fired a two-under 70. N.C. State's Brandon Deweiler finished third with a nine-under 207.
ECU returns to competition Monday, Sept. 27 at the VCU Shootout in Manakin-Sabot, Va. The two-day, 54-hole tournament will be held at the Hermitage Country Club.
