GREENSBORO, N.C. - East Carolina carded a final round three-under par 285 to take first place at the UNCG Starmount Fall Classic Tuesday afternoon in its first tournament of the 2010 fall season. The three-day event was reduced to 36 holes after rain cancelled Monday's round at the par-72, 6,323-yard Bryan Park Player's Course.
ECU (13-0-1) and N.C. State finished tied atop the 15-team field at 19-over par (595) after 36 holes. But due to the tiebreaker, counting the fifth golfer, the Pirates walked away with the team championship. The tiebreaker came down to each team's fifth golfer in Tuesday's final round, where ECU counted Colleen Estes' three-over par 75 and N.C. State went with Brooke Baker's six-over 78.
"I was really proud of the way that we bounced back and played today," said Head Coach Kevin Williams. "I think Sunday's play was just nerves of the season starting and playing other competition. We picked up some good wins over teams that are very similar to us. Now we just have to turn and get ready for another tough competition next week at the Windy City Collegiate Classic."
ECU, who entered final round play tied for sixth, recorded the lowest team 18-hole score of the tournament besting second-place N.C. State's 293 by eight strokes. Four of ECU's five golfers carded rounds of even par or better and were led by junior Amy Otteson's two-under 70 (35-35), which consisted of five birdies Tuesday. Otteson finished tied for eighth with a 36-hole score of 148 (78-70) for her fourth career top-10 finish and improved her score by eight strokes from day one.
Amber Littman recorded an even par 72 (36-36) and finished with a score of 147 (75-72) to claim her eighth career top-5 placement. The senior from Stoney Creek, N.C. finished the event with five birdies and 23 pars. Freshman Fanny Wolte (77-71=148), who participated in her first collegiate event, took a share of eighth place with Otteson after firing a final round one-under par 71 (37-34). Faith Hardison also competed in her first collegiate tournament and finished tied for 20th with a two-day score of 152 (80-72) with included four birdies and 21 pars. Participating as an individual for ECU was junior Julia Strandberg who finished tied for 53rd along with Estes (83-75) with a total score of 158 (80-78).
Stetson's Alex Buelow (70-71) used a birdie on the final hole to tie N.C. State's Brittany Marchand (71-70) for co-medalist honors with a two-day score of 141. Stefanie Kenoyer (Furman/143) and Josefine (Western Carolina/141) finished tied for third two-shots behind the leaders, while Littman along with Penn State duo Ellen Ceresko and Emily Ransone were tied for fifth place.
ECU will be back on the course Monday, Oct. 4 when they travel to Highland, Ill. to participate in the 2010 Windy City Classic hosted by Northwestern
