GREENVILLE, N.C. - Josh Chandler (Washington, N.C.), Jacob Hicks (Mebane, N.C.) and Trevor Times (Williamsburg, Va.) each signed a National Letter-of-Intent with East Carolina during the early signing period and will begin competing for the Pirates beginning in fall 2012 announced head men's golf coach Press McPhaul Thursday.
"This class represents the nucleus of our 2012 recruiting class," McPhaul said. "This group of young men will be vital to helping us attain our goal of being an annual fixture at the NCAA Championships."
Chandler is a seven-time Eastern North Carolina Junior Golf League Champion and winner of the 2008 Coastal Plains Junior Amateur Championship.
"It is good to have a homegrown young man in our program," McPhaul said. "Josh stands out as a strong athlete that creates a lot of power with his swing."
Hicks earned individual medalist honors at the 2010 North Carolina Christian School Association (NCCSA) championships and helped Alamance Christian School capture back-to-back titles in '10 and '11. He also finished among the top 10 at the N.C. Amateur Match Play Championships.
"Jacob comes from a rich golf background," McPhaul explained. "He seems to have a firm grasp on what a good player needs to think and do in the moments leading up to executing a shot. He also is sneaky powerful, evidence of athletic gifts. His demeanor, game and personality are similar to (senior, co-captain) David Watkins'."
Times finished third at the Virginia AA State Championships this past year after being named district player-of-the-year and capturing the regional individual championship. He also qualified for the United State Junior Amateur Championship and was a semifinalist at the VSGA Junior Match Play Championships.
"Trevor Times is a young man who has plenty of talent and athleticism," McPhaul said. "Most importantly to me, he has displayed a battler's mentality in competition. He seems to go about his work with diligence and determination, which is something really good competitors do.
"I'm confident each of these guys have high aspirations and that they will be committed to excellence in academics and golf. They understand what it must take for us to achieve our objectives at East Carolina. They will arrive willing to work, willing to sweat, and willing to look under all the rocks necessary to develop as a person and player."
