WILMINGTON, N.C. --- The East Carolina men's golf team fired a final round 308 and finished tied for third at the Seahawk Invitational Monday at the Country Club of Landfall.
The Pirates began the final round in second-place, two shots behind No. 25 Wake Forest. The Demon Deacons carded a third round 310 to fall into a third-place tie with ECU, while UNC Wilmington leapfrogged both teams to win the team title. The Seahawks fired a 54-hole total of 15-over 879 (290-293-296) to defeat second-place Liberty (303-285-295=883) by four strokes.
Junior Harold Varner was the Pirates' top finisher in the event, concluding his efforts in 11th-place at five-over 221 (75-71-75). Varner shot a three-over 75 on the final 18 holes of competition after shooting three-over on the first 36 holes.
The Pirates had four golfers finish in the top 20 individually. Junior David Watkins fired a seven-over 79 Monday to fall into 12th-place after being tied for third-place through two rounds. Waktins finished at six-over (73-70-79=222), two strokes ahead of teammate Zach Edmondson (72-71-81=224), who finished tied for 18th.
Jake Colley finished not too far behind in 22nd at nine-over 225 (74-74-77=225).
Individual medalist honors went to Thomas Bass of UNC Wilmington. Bass fired a final round score of 72 and finished the 54-hole event at even-par 216 (71-73-72).
East Carolina returns to the links March 7-8 at the Palmetto Invitational in Aiken, S.C.
