VALDOSTA, Ga. - The East Carolina women's golf team claimed its third top-five finish of the season Tuesday at the Kinderlou Forest Challenge after carding a final round 309. The Second-Annual Kinderlou Forest Challenge, hosted by Kennesaw State University, was held at the par-73, 6.349-yard Kinderlou Forest Golf Club.
The Pirates (50-32-2), who entered final round action in fourth place, dropped into a tie for fifth with Furman at 44-over par 920. Chattanooga (896) garnered the team title as the Mocs posted a final round two-under par to overcome second place Coastal Carolina (905). Augusta State (906) finished third, while No. 36 Florida State took fourth.
Senior Colleen Estes (228) led a trio of Pirates in the top-20 with her 13th place finish after carding a five-over par 78. Freshman Sarah Almond and junior Amy Otteson finished tied for 19th with a tournament score of 230. Almond, who competed in her first collegiate tournament, closed out the day with a four-over par 77. Otteson led all Pirates Tuesday with a three-over par 76. Rounding out the Pirates roster were freshman Fanny Wolte (233) and senior Amber Littman (243), who finished tied for 31st and 62nd place.
"Our struggles continued on the greens today," said Head Coach Kevin Williams. "We haven't played a lot of tournaments on Bermuda grass and it showed. Luckily we are getting that experience now and in the next couple of events to prepare us for the Conference USA Championships. I was really proud of the way Colleen stepped up this weekend to go along with the play of Amy and Sarah, who participated in her first collegiate tournament."
Medalist honors went to Casey Kennedy of Augusta State after she fired a one-under par 218, while Chattanooga's Yushira Budhram (219) and Furman's Laura Wearn (220) rounded out the top-three.
The Pirates will be back in action Sunday, March 6 when they participate in the Barefoot at the Beach Intercollegiate in Myrtle Beach, S.C.
