RALEIGH, N.C. -The East Carolina cross country squads turned in a pair of strong showings Friday at the Wolfpack Invitational, both finishing second behind only host N.C. State. Brittany Copeland came in second overall for the women, but was considered the meet winner because the first-place performer was running unattached. For the men's squad, Jakub Trzasalski paced the squad for the first time in his career, placing 14th overall.
The women enjoyed a record-setting meet as seven of the 11 performers established career-best marks. Copeland, who finished the 5K race in 17:15.7, led the way. It was the second-best time in program history, just 15 seconds behind Johanna Allen's 2001 performance. Copeland's previous top time was 17:28, set a year ago at the Conference USA Championship.
Senior Tara Wilson was not far behind Copeland, clocking out at 17:44.9 to take eighth overall, her fourth top-10 finish of the last two seasons. Wilson also earned a place in the ECU record list, turning in the eighth-best mark.
Classmate Amanda Lapp set a personal best with a 17:50.3 time, also the 12th best in program history. She placed 11th overall, continuing her strong start to the campaign after finishing ninth two weeks ago in the season-opening meet.
Four sophomores rounded out the top-25 finishes for the Pirate women with Chelsea Hollingsworth turning in a personal-best 18:22.0 to take 15th place. Bjork Olsen clocked out in 18:29.9 to take 18th. Stefanie Fresenius, competing in her first ever race for ECU, came in 22nd overall with a time of 18:45.8. Amanda Tomlin booked a career-best mark of 18:50.7 to finish 24th.
Leading the next group of runners was freshman Erin McGuirk, who cut nearly a minute off her time from two weeks ago to finish in 19:02.2 and place 26th. Two juniors with personal-best marks were close behind in Britney Kott (19:12.7/28th) and Kirstin Anderson (19:17.5/29th).
Rounding out the East Carolina contingent was senior Andrea Barletta, who clocked out in 20:15.6, good for 41st overall.
For the first time in his career, junior Trzasalski paced the men with a 15:23.5 time in the 5K. The mark is the sixth fastest in program history.
Senior Zack Montijo was the other Pirate to finish in the top 20, placing 19th with a time of 15:29.6, the seventh fastest 5K in the ECU record book. Montijo now owns three of the top-10 5K performances.
Junior Antonio Palmer and sophomore Michael Quercia each came in the top 30 with Palmer setting a career-best time at 16:08.7 to place 26th. Quercia was close behind in 28th with a 16:13.8 mark.
Two freshmen rounded out the top-50 performances as Adam Morrow (16.50.7) and Tevin Richardson (16:57.4) placed 42nd and 43rd.
Classmate Brandon Dunford wrapped up the ECU contingent with a time of 18:23.2 to claim 72nd place.
The men and women run again next Friday, Sept. 23, for the only home meet of the season, the ECU Pirate Invitational.
