BOONE, N.C. - The East Carolina cross country squads opened the 2011 campaign Friday evening with the women taking fifth place out of 12 and the men claiming 11th of 11 at the Covered Bridge Open, hosted by Appalachian State. The women turned in a pair of top-10 performances as seniors Amanda Lapp and Brittany Copeland finished ninth and 10th, respectively. For the men, sophomore Michael Quercia paced the squad and came in 54th overall.
Lapp finished the 5K race in 18:55.2 to edge Copeland, who clocked out at 18:55.6. It was the first time Lapp has paced the Pirates.
Sophomore Chelsea Hollingsworth got her second campaign off to a strong start, placing 21st with a time of 19:29.2. Two more sophomores were not far behind as Bjork Olsen and Amanda Tomlin finished back-to-back at 36th and 37th. Olsen completed the event in 19:52.1 while Tomlin's mark was 19:55.6. Yet another sophomore, Kelley Miko, rounded out the top-40 performances with a 19:57.6 time that earned her 39th.
Freshman Erin McGuirk led the next group of ECU women, claiming 51st and timing out in 20:11.8. Senior Andrea Barletta wrapped up the Pirate contingent, finishing 88th in 21:22.5.
On the men's side, Quercia made his East Carolina debut after transferring from the University of Texas and ran the 8K in 27:32.1. It was the first 8K of his collegiate career as he participated in one meet, a 5K, as a Longhorn last year.

Sophomore Jakub Trzasalski completed the race in 28:18.2 to finish 81st while junior Antonio Palmer and freshman Adam Morrow were close behind with 88th and 89th-place performances.
