GREENVILLE, N.C. - For the third-straight year, the East Carolina men's and women's cross country teams claimed the ECU Pirate Invitational titles Friday evening at Overton's Lake Kristi. Both squads topped Shaw University and Barton College to claim the title at ECU's only home meet of the 2011 season.
Senior Brittany Copeland won the women's race for the third time in her career, completing the rain-soaked course's 5K in 17:40.02, tied for the sixth-best time in program history. On the men's side, junior Cory Hampshire, the 2010 meet winner, repeated as champion with a time of 15:45.31 in the 5K after the threat of additional rainfall in the area changed the men's event from an 8K to a 5K. Hampshire ran the event unattached, making sophomore Jakub Trzasalski's mark of 15:51.80 the top performance that counted toward the Pirates' team score.
Of the top 16 women to cross the finish line, all but one were East Carolina runners. Senior Amanda Lapp came in second with a personal-best time of 17:43.91, earning her a tie for eighth place on the program record list. Classmate Tara Wilson took third, finishing in 18:05.34. Sophomores Bjork Olsen (18:44.88) and Stefanie Fresenius (18:45.60) rounded out the top-five performers.
A pair of Pirates running unattached took seventh and ninth with junior Stacey Gonzalez clocking out at a career-low 18:56.36 and classmate Brooke Kott finishing in 19:07.90.
Sophomores Amanda Tomlin and Kelley Miko led the next group of finishers, placing 10th and 11th with times of 19:23.33 and 19:36.16. Freshman Erin McGuirk was not far behind, claiming 12th in 19:41.16.
Junior Britney Kott (19:47.47), junior Kirstin Anderson (19:50.40), sophomore Kaylee Bythell (20:19.14) and senior Andrea Barletta (20:37.18) rounded out the top-16 performances for the Pirates.
Running unattached, sophomore Michelle Bailey clocked out in 21:44.55 to come in 19th while senior Karyn Guidry ran unattached in her first career race and placed 25th with a time of 25:00.66.
The Pirate men were nearly as impressive as the women, claiming six of the top seven slots. Hampshire's time of 15:45.31 was good for the 14th fastest in program history. Trzasalski also made his way onto the record list, turning in a 15:51.80 performance that was the 17th best in the East Carolina record book. Following close behind Trzaslaski was senior Zack Montijo, who finished in 15:57.33 to take third place.
Pacing the next group of runners was sophomore Chase Miller, who ran unattached and took fifth with a time of 16:05.38. Sophomore Michael Quercia's 16:15.80 mark earned him sixth place while junior Antonio Palmer (16:23.85) claimed seventh.
A trio of freshmen wrapped up the East Carolina performances with Tevin Richardson's mark of 17:03.86 good for 11th place overall. Adam Morrow clocked out in 17:23.53 for 13th place with Brandon Dunford completing the race in 18:46.57 to take 21st.
The Pirate men and women return to action next Saturday, Oct. 1, at the Greater Louisville Classic in Louisville, Ky.
