GEORGETOWN, S.C. --- With three Pirates in the top 10 individually -- including sophomore Ryan Eibner, who tied for medalist runner-up -- the East Carolina University men's golf team earned a second-place finish at the 2012 General Hackler Championships held at the DeBordieu Club.
The Pirates, ranked No. 41 in the latest Golfstat ratings, finished two strokes back of No. 14 North Florida and four strokes ahead of No. 9 Arkansas. UNF won the team title with a three-round tally of 872 (300-282-290), while the Pirates moved up three places Monday with a third round score of 285, second lowest team round of the tourney, to complete the 54-hole event with a score of 874.
ECU finished in front of four teams ranked ahead of it. The ninth-ranked Razorbacks earned third-place with a score of 878, followed by No. 19 New Mexico in fourth (879) and No. 24 Virginia (886) in fifth. The Pirates also distanced themselves by 30 strokes ahead of No. 40 Tennessee (924).
Individual medalists honors went to UNF's Sean Dale. Dale was the only player to shoot par or better as he fired a 1-under 212 (69-70-73) to finish three strokes ahead of a trio of second-place finishers, including Eibner.
Eibner fired a 1-under 70 in the final round to finish at 2-over 215 (72-73-70). He pared 15 of 18 holes with two birdies and one bogey Tuesday to post the best finish of his collegiate career.
Senior Adam Stephenson finished alone in sixth-place at 4-over 217 (69-75-73), while fellow senior Harold Varner vaulted up 14 positions, shooting 1-under on the final 18 holes to finish tied for ninth at 6-over 219 (75-74-70).
