Pirates In Seventh After Round One Of C-USA Championships

TEXARKANA, Ark. - The East Carolina men's golf team sits in seventh place after the first round of the 2012 Conference USA Championships at the par-72, 6,935-yard Texarkana Country Club. The Pirates fired a 7-over 295 and trail first-place Memphis, who carded a 6-under 282, by 13 strokes after 18 holes.
The Tigers, one of three teams to shoot under-par, hold a two-stroke lead over second-place SMU (284) and a four-stroke advantage over third-place Marshall (286). UCF is (290) is five strokes ahead of ECU in fourth-place, while Houston and UAB are tied for fifth-place at 4-over 292.
The Pirates hold a one-stroke lead over eighth-place Southern Miss (296) and a two-shot lead over ninth-place UTEP (297). Tulsa sits alone in 10th-place at 13-over 301 followed by Rice in 11th at 21-over 309.
Junior Zach Edmondson and senior David Watkins posted ECU's lowest first round tallies at 1-over 73 and are part of a six-way tie for 20th. Senior Harold Varner sits one stroke back of his teammates, tied for 26th at 2-over 74. Senior Adam Stephenson fired a 3-over 75 to complete the first round tied for 32nd. Sophomore Ryan Eibner is tied for 36th at 4-over 76.
Memphis senior Jack Belote and SMU senior Max Buckley are tied atop the leaderboard at 4-under 68. Memphis' Jonathan Fly, reigning C-USA individual medalist, and Houston's Curtis Reed are tied for third at 3-under 69.
East Carolina will be paired with Southern Miss and UTEP for round two, teeing off No. 10 Monday at 9:50 a.m. EDT.
