Kirk Earns All-Tournament Honors At Lady Pirate Intercollegiate

GREENVILLE, N.C. - East Carolina senior Katie Kirk carded a final round even-par 72 earning all-tournament team honors at the 2014 Lady Pirate Intercollegiate. The two-day, 54-hole event was being held at the par-72, 6,088-yard Greenville Country Club.
Kirk, who posted her fourth career top five finish, closed out the event with a front nine score of 35 (1-under) and shot a 37 (1-over) on the back for a 54-hole total of 221 (5-over). On the week she led the 95-person field with 41 pars, while ranking third in par-4 scoring (4.13) and tying for 17th in par-5 scoring (4.83).
Junior's Frida Gustafsson Spang (223/7-over) and Nicoline Engstroem Skaug (224/8-over) joined Kirk atop the leaderboard each recording top 15 placements helping No. 34 East Carolina (35-12) to a fourth place team finish.
Spang carded the Pirates low round of the day with a 2-under par 70, which consisted of four birdies, two bogeys and 12 pars for a share of 11th place. She ranked among the tournament leaders in par-4 scoring (t1st/4.10), total birdies (third/12) and par-5 scoring (t17th/4.83), while recording her 16th career top-20 finish.
Skaug posted her 13th career top-20 placement with a 54-hole score of 224, which concluded with a 5-over 77 on Tuesday. In all, she fired seven total birdies and 33 pars to go along with a par-5 scoring average of 4.83 - all ranking among the tournament leaders.
Rounding out the Pirates starting five were freshman Lisa Pettersson (231) and Emily Eng (248), who finished tied for 41st and 86th. Pettersson ranked among the leaders in par-4 scoring (4.27), while Eng was tied for third in par-3 scoring (2.92).
A trio of Pirates participated as individuals with freshman Victoria Allred and junior Lane Gakeler claiming a share of 27th with a score of 228 (12-over). Allred made her collegiate debut this week carding rounds of 79, 75 and 74. During the event she tallied 33 pars and five birdies. Gakeler logged rounds of 75, 75 and 78 in her third event of the year registering an eagle on the par-5, 435-yard 18th hole in the second round.
Senior Devan Murphy posted rounds of 86, 80 and 88 to finish tied for 92nd with a score of 255 (38-over).
GRU Augusta led wire-to-wire in the team portion claiming its third Lady Pirate Intercollegiate title (2004-05, 2014). The Jaguars posted an impressive 12-over par 876 finishing 19 strokes ahead of Kennesaw State (895/31-over). Middle Tennessee claimed third place with a 54-hole total of 897 (33-over) followed by East Carolina (899/35-over) and William & Mary (903/39-over).
Winthrop's Jennifer Dilger took home individual medalist honors with a 2-under 214 (69-74-71) finishing two strokes ahead of GRU Augusta's Jessica Haigwood (216/even). Haigwood's teammate Josefine Nyqvist (217/1-over) placed third followed by Old Dominion's Maggie Simmermache (219/3-over). Rounding out all-tournament team honors (top-five) were High Point's Sarah Bae, GRU Augusta's Teresa Caballer Hernani and ECU's Katie Kirk at 221 (5-over).
Following Gabby Weiss' (JMU) hole-in-one on the par-3, 145-yard 10th during opening round action Monday, Longwood's Courtney Tolton recorded an ace on the par-3, 137-yard third hole Tuesday morning.
The Pirates will return to competition on Nov. 2-4 when they travel to San Antonio, Texas to participate in the Jim West Challenge at Tapatio Springs GC, which will be hosted by Texas State University.
