TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - The East Carolina women's golf team carded an opening round 297 (9-over) and is tied with Baylor for 18th after the first round of the 2014 NCAA East Regional. The three-day event is being held at the par-72 Southwood Golf Course.
Sophomore Frida Gustafsson Spang leads the Pirates after her opening round 72 (34-38), which consisted of four birdies (three of first four holes) and four bogeys, and is currently tied for 28th sitting seven strokes behind first round leader Emily Penttila of Tulane (65/7-under).
Senior Fanny Wolte is tied for 60th after her 2-over 74 (38-36) round. Wolte, who is the second Pirate to participate in four consecutive NCAA Regionals following Abby Bools, fired three birdies and 11 pars.
Junior Katie Kirk posted an 18-hole score of 75 (3-over) and currently is tied for 70th. Rounding out ECU's roster are sophomore's Lane Gakeler (76) and Nicoline Engstroem Skaug (81), who are tied for 87t and 120th.
Vanderbilt (277) holds a three-shot lead over Tulane (280) sitting at 11-under par. Virginia is six shots back at 283 (5-under) in third, while Duke (284) and NC State (286) round out the Top-5.
