BOONE, N.C. - Behind a quintet of top-40 finishers, the East Carolina women's cross country team earned a fourth-place finish, while the men's team took eighth at the season-opening Covered Bridge Invitational Friday evening.
The women's 5K opened the meet, as sophomore and FIU transfer Caroline Reiser was the first Pirate to cross the finish line in 14th place with a time of 19:30.34. Sophomore Caitlyn Sheva was next to complete the course with a time of 19:55.74 for 22nd place, followed by classmates Morgan Anderson in 32nd (20:19.15), Sydney Teague 37th (20:30.48) and Maura McDonnell at 39th overall (20:45.80) to pace the squad.
The men's side completed a 6,400-meter course, as redshirt senior and 2013 all-conference third team performer Chase Miller clocked in at 21:53.21, good for 34th place overall. Redshirt junior Brather Cline was less than 10 seconds and five runners behind Miller, turning in a time of 22:02.33 to lead ECU.
East Carolina will return to action Sept. 19 when it competes at NC State's Adidas Invitational in Cary, N.C., at the WakeMed Cross Country Course.
